This is the largest campground on the island and was formerly under the auspices of the State of Michigan.  When our DNR officer passed away, the township decided to name it in his honor and so the Bill Wagner Memorial Campground came into existence.

Set on the beautiful Big Sand Bay, the Wagner campground offers the visitor a panaramic view of Lake Michigan.  On a clear day you can even see the Mackinac Bridge and most days the mainland is a hazy line on the horizon.  If storms are coming in, you may wake up to see the gigantic Great Lakes freighters anchored in the bay to lie in the protection of the island.

This campground is primitive camping at its best.  There are 24 campsites here scattered throughout the woods, all within a few steps of the beautiful swimming beach.  There is a hand pump for water and a pay phone for emergencies.   Keep in mind that this is 'primitive'..... no running water, no showers.  Cost to camp per night is $5.00 and no reservations are required.
