This building was originally the McCann Store and was probably the most modern building on the island at the time it was built in 1887. It had electric lights powered by a generator as electricity as we know it didn't arrive on the island until 1939. The upstairs of this building was built as an opera house and a social hall. It later became LaFreniere's IGA Store and then Dockside Market. It was razed and the facade was saved and stored to be used as the front for the future Beaver Island Community House as the sign below posted on the site shows. This Beaver Island Community House will be the future home of the Chamber of Commerce, Community Players, will have a theatre, senior center, day care area, and a convention area. |
